If you’re considering abortion, it’s important to understand the different procedures, potential risks, and why getting an ultrasound first is critical.
At Wayne Pregnancy Center, we offer free, confidential ultrasounds to help you make an informed decision after a positive pregnancy test.
How Medical Abortion Works
A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, involves taking two drugs:
Mifepristone
This first pill blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy. Without this critical hormone, your uterine lining will shed, and your pregnancy will eventually detach, be starved of nutrients, and end.
Misoprostol
Taken 24-48 hours later, this drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy out through your vagina.
Medical abortion is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is 10 weeks gestation or under.
How Surgical Abortion Works
Surgical abortion is performed in a clinical setting, and it involves dilating the cervix so that surgical instruments can enter the uterus to remove the pregnancy. This is done in one of two ways:
Aspiration (Vacuum) Abortion
Used up to 14-16 weeks, this type of surgical abortion involves using strong suction to remove the pregnancy.
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
Performed after 16 weeks, this abortion method combines strong suction, scraping tools, and sometimes forceps to remove larger parts of the pregnancy.
Risks of Abortion
Both medical and surgical abortions carry risks, including:
- A potentially life-threatening infection that could result in sepsis
- Heavy bleeding
- Damage to the uterus or cervix that could lead to painful periods or future infertility (with surgical procedures)
- Emotional and psychological effects
Why an Ultrasound is Critical
Before any pregnancy decision, an ultrasound is a critical step that can help protect your health by giving you essential details, including:
Pregnancy viability
Ultrasound can help determine if the pregnancy has signs of life, like a heartbeat, or if you’ve miscarried. If you’ve miscarried, you will need follow-up care, not an abortion.
Pregnancy location
Most pregnancies develop in the uterus, but sometimes, they attach outside the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy, and it’s a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical intervention.
Estimates Gestational Age
Ultrasound can provide your pregnancy’s gestational age, which will determine which abortion procedures you’re eligible for.
